Malcolm Hundley is is an Australian artist whose main medium is acrylic on canvas.
He describes the style of his paintings as “a form of realism simplified by a level of graphic art technique that creates an image revealing the essence of the subject".
His motivation is to share his perspective of the everyday scenes and objects in the urban environment. "I take time to deeply scrutinize a subject as I paint. I would like the viewer to spend a little time to also experience the form, colour and occasional humour in the subject I have rendered."
There is a celebratory element to Malcolm's work - a celebration of human endeavour in the built environment and occasionally of the effort to decorate and humanise places that may otherwise be harsh and unwelcoming.
Having lived in or around Fremantle, Western Asutralia for over four decades it is no surprise that most of the topics for his work are the scenes with which he is familiar in the local town and port.
Malcolm draws inspiration from the striking, distinctive light of West Coast Australia, a quality he captures through his precise, hard edged technique. He sees the urban landscape of our neighbourhoods as a dynamic stage, inviting viewers to step into the scene and engage with these places in new ways.
Collectors are drawn to the familiarity of Malcolm's subjects. His paintings encourage a closer look at places that might otherwise be overlooked on our daily walks or drives, highlighting details and nuances and connecting us through a joy of shared discovery.
In his 2022 exhibition Malcolm featured a group of paintings he titled "Signs of Life - Fremantle", a chronicle of images visitors and residents might see about the town. In particular, the series of 17 paintings were based on marks made by others. They ranged from formal commercial signs through to graffiti and even vandalism.
His 2024 exhibition continued his chosen task of documenting the urban landscape of Fremantle, including the recently removed buildings at East Fremantle Oval.
